About Allan Lawson's Fighting Arts, LLC

Allan Lawson began his martial arts training in January 1974 as a member of Marcorie Cooper's first class of students at Lightning Fire Mountain, a Shaolin style Kung Fu school located in the South Dakota Black Hills, where he studied during college.

Next, living in areas where instructors were unavailable, he began what became a nineteen and a half year course of independent study and training in applied martial arts.  He was guided by the  writings of Bruce Lee on Jeet Kune Do, insights he  was able to glean from other writings, films and school visits, and by his own intuition.

Through trial and error, over countless hours of diligent training, he researched all the possibilities and limitations of the human body and spirit.  He found and pushed back the boundaries of attainable skills and abilities.  His teachers were the forces of nature and the challenges he created for himself.

Next, he had the good fortune to take instruction in Kung Fu San Soo and Escrima from Master Scott Leitch in Mesa and Chandler, Arizona starting in January 1994.  Progress was much more rapid under the guidance of such a skilled practitioner and insightful and motivational teacher.

In July 1999 he began teaching a select group of his own students.  In February 7, 2006 he formed Allan Lawson's Fighting Arts, LLC, intending to make this training program more widely available in a martial arts school setting, and build a core group of proficient, dedicated martial arts students and associate instructors.

He also took lessons in Yin Style Bagua with Ed Guerra's study group in Mesa, Arizona for several months in 1999.

He considers himself a student first, teaching as a means to gain greater understanding himself, as well as to share what he has learned with others.

Allan Lawson earned an Associate of Science Degree in Management at the National College of Business, a Bachelor of Arts Degree with a double major in History and  Archeology, with a concentration in graduate level courses in Linguistics from the University of North Dakota, and a Juris Doctor Degree from the University of North Dakota School of Law.

He is a member of The State Bar Association of North Dakota and has been admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota.  He was owner of Lawson Law Offices in that state where he practiced law for approximately 5 years before moving to Arizona in 1990.

Other interests include natural health and  nutrition, fitness, backpacking, camping, travel, research and writing, economics, business systems, investment, real estate and home construction and repair projects.

Integrative Functional Conditioning SM

Integrative Functional Conditioning is a dynamic performance oriented mind-body-spirit approach to combative martial art training and fitness. It is not merely a weight loss or body building program, although a lean, strong physique is necessarily one of the natural results of this intensive training. It is much more comprehensive, involving development of greater capacity for endurance, strength, quickness and flexibility, not only in a physical sense but psychological, cognitive and spiritual as well. As an example, rather than focusing on this or that isolated muscle and thinking only of increasing it's size, we consider the being as a whole. We want the whole creature undivided, working as one. We are more interested in capacity than in appearances. We are interested in developing useful skills and abilities. This is the ultimate self defense fitness training program.

ALFA Instruction and Training

The minimum age for ALFA membership and instruction is 13 years.

Our sincere intention is that this message reaches those few exceptional people among us suited for this course of study. The words "kung fu" mean exceptional  skill gained through long, hard work.  Sorry, that's just the way the universe works.  While a good teacher can guide you, nothing worthwhile is accomplished but by effort over time.

If you will not be content with a diluted, dumbed-down form of fighting art or an unrealistic sporting art, if you want to develop a lot of combative fighting and life skills rather than just a couple, and if you are as serious about your training as we are, then you are looking in the right place. If you still have old-fashioned high standards and goals and are motivated to continually improve yourself over time, you are the one we have been searching for.

This is an endeavor which customarily requires a minimum of 11 years time and stained effort to attain Master level proficiency.  Be prepared to make a commitment to, and invest in at least one full year of training in order to achieve good results.

Testimonials:
"Allan, I want to thank you for everything that you have taught me and the time that you have spent with me. You have given me invaluable tools that have molded me as a martial artist and have given me a strong foundation for anything that I wish to pursue. I am more comfortable and confident than ever.  I carry myself like a completely different person and I have you to thank for introducing me to Kung Fu. I am sure that I will be able to defend myself in the  close combat scenario if I need to.  I will also not hesitate to refer anyone to you.  I give you my deepest thanks."     Tim Jones

"Allan:  We wanted to take a minute and let you know what an amazing change we've seen in our son since joining your program.  Mason's self-esteem, self discipline and overall confidence has increased with leaps and bounds.  Mason has also lost 25 lbs since beginning the program last November; his body has also found new definition.  We are very proud of his progress as it has flowed into all aspects of his life...eating healthy, drinking water (vs. soda), disciplined work-outs on his own and discipline in his personal / spiritual studies.  Thanks for helping our son!"    Jeff and Toni Turner

Update 1/19/10:  Mason has lost more than 50 lbs.  He is now a lean 208 and stronger than before.  He says he is glad that he started his studies at ALFA before going to college.  He has gained the confidence and cognitive skills he needed for academic success.  He has made very good progress as a martial artist and is about 9 months into Green Belt.

"I began my work with ALFA 7 years ago training with Master Lawson. I was educated in the Kung Fu San Soo fighting system primarily. It is a practical and effective fighting system which provides many benefits. It is truly a fighting art. Also, a solid foundation is provided in punching and kicking using long range styles and weapon instruction. The one on one instruction and personal training are top notch."                                                                Steve Lundeen
(Allan Lawson has not been officially awarded the Master certificate in the KFSS ranking system by another instructor holding that title.  Steve uses the "Master" designation here in the traditional sense, indicating a mutual respect between teacher and student.  Thank you Steve.)

"Allan is one of those rare individuals that put in that extra effort."     Henning Wallgren                    Europe '07     Zoot Shooter

Q "Were u able to learn all the san soo forms when you were studying the system?"

A
Jimmy taught a new form every four weeks from the ancient books he possessed.  My teacher, Scott Leitch, trained well beyond the 11 years that are the minimum to become a Master, so he accumulated many forms.  I presently possess about 100 such form diagrams and instructions.  They take 8 or 9 years to cycle through as empty hand forms.  All the forms can also be adapted into weapons forms for use with almost unlimited numbers of weapon types.  All these can be reconstituted into many personal form variations as well.

After years of training you develop an ability to interpret and teach yourself forms you have never seen demonstrated before.  There are limited numbers of movements that the human body can do.

The same goes for the techniques, of which 3 to 6 are commonly learned each week.  The standard lower belt techniques, which take about 3 years to progress through, are repeated over and over when you teach so they are more easily remembered.

It can sometimes take me a few days of reading the instructions and experimenting before I understand some of the Black Belt techniques I have not seen before.  I still haven't taught all the 15 or so years worth of Black Belt Techniques that I have in written form.

Of course in the freestyle training, which starts after 6 months you react to what your partner presents rather than by route repetition of memorized techniques.  You are creating your own responses out of all the techniques you have learned previously, perhaps combining parts from different techniques, all without conscious thought.  The possibilities are unlimited.

While the forms are done in the air to improve form, balance, and timing, the techniques are the practical application.  San Soo differs from the other arts in that we are able to really do, or simulate, the techniques, which are designed to maim and kill, without being harmed.  This is because the training is not competitive.  We take turns allowing the partner to practice the technique, without resisting.  We are trained to react to what the partner does, and do proper breakfalls, avoiding injury and allowing realistic training.

To someone watching, it appears that we are really fighting.  I have seen visitors turn white with shock and even quickly leave the school and never return because they were overwhelmed by the sense of potential danger and what may appear to them to be cruel indifference to the well being of the partners.

Q "I was curious if students get charged testing fees in san soo."

A  No.  Neither Scott nor I, or anyone I know did that.  I always donate a new good quality belt and a laminated certificate to students when they are promoted.  Conversely, in some Karate schools you will notice that some of the best students, wearing worn out uniforms, are still Brown Belts because they cannot afford to test.
